The remodeling season is here – it's time for new beginnings! Spring brings time not only for family gatherings and warm weather, but also the perfect time for home renovations and remodels.
Kitchen remodels are a popular home project thanks to the overall impact they usually have on the look and feel of your home. After all, the kithcne is the heart of your home!
The problem is, kitchen remodels don’t come cheap, and you may have difficulty staying on budget.
Generally speaking, stick to the 5-15% rule. According to this rule, the cost of your kitchen remodel should be within 5 and 15% of your home’s value. Suppose, for instance, your home is valued at $300,000. This means that the cost of your kitchen remodel should fall anywhere between $15,000 (5%) and $45,000 (15%).
If you spend less than 5%, you risk not changing (or worse, decreasing) your home’s value. If you spend more than 15%, you risk losing money when you sell it.
While every rule has exceptions, the 5-15% rule is almost always ideal. The following are factors to consider when estimating the budget for your kitchen remodel.
Cabinetry
On average, kitchen cabinets will cost you anywhere between $500 and $1,500 for every cabinet box, plus the installation cost. The average kitchen will also take about 30 boxes.
The other thing you’ll also need to consider is the cabinet material. Typically, you have two options to choose from: laminate or wood. Laminate cabinets surely look pretty, but nothing beats real wood. If properly cared for, full wood can last you a lifetime.
Alder, maple, cherry, oak, and hickory are the most common choices for wood cabinets.
Other than the factors aforementioned, another factor to keep in mind is the method of production. There are two options here: built-to-order and built-on-site custom cabinetry. The former is more cost-effective; the efficiency in design can help eliminate the need for custom cabinetry, as well as lower your costs.
Counters
On average, a square foot of kitchen counter surface will cost you $10 on the lower side and $125 on the higher side. While granite is perhaps the most common countertop surface in most kitchens, it isn’t the only option. There are other durable and beautiful choices, including marble, soapstone, quartz stone, and concrete.
Quartz stone in particular is a great alternative to granite. It’s not only cost-effective, but it’s also both heat- and scratch-resistant. It also doesn’t require much maintenance.
Flooring
There are two main factors that impact the cost of kitchen flooring. These are the surface area and the material. A square foot of kitchen flooring will cost anywhere between $2 and $40 based on the material you go for.
If you’re working on a tight budget, consider options such as vinyl, tile, and linoleum. These will cost you anywhere between $1 and $8 per square foot excluding installation.
On the other hand, if you're looking for something a bit extravagant, then go for hardwood or natural stone options. These will run you anywhere between $4 and $30 per square foot.
There are also a handful of midrange options you can consider, like cork, bamboo, concrete, and laminate. They're durable and beautiful, as well.
We advise going for laminate floors. This option is not only budget-friendly, but it’s also durable and gives the rich look of hardwood.
Appliances
When it comes to new construction homes, expect to spend about 2 percent of the overall budget on the appliance package. This, however, varies depending on the appliance package you go for.
A standard appliance package can cost you anywhere between $2,000 and $4,000, whereas a luxury package can cost you at least $10,000. A mid-range appliance package usually goes for around $7,500.
You can also expect the budget to go higher if you opt for a warming drawer, a wine fridge, or double oven.
